Deval Patrick Makes History

In Massachusetts, former Clinton Justice Department official as well as former civil rights and corporate attorney Deval Patrick has become the state's first BLACK Governor and only the second elected nationally since Reconstruction. The first was L. Douglas Wilder of Virginia who left office in 1995.

This gubernatorial race was amazing! Deval Patrick ran against Republican Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey--a woman.

Had he lost, this election would have still made history for the state of Massachusetts, never having a female governor.

Deval took the seat with 56% of the votes, easily defeating his competition. Patrick's election will end 16 years of Republican control of the governor's office.

After watching his gubernatorial speech last night I have to admit he's a very charismatic man. He gave a very well written and well spoken speech.

"...You are every black man, woman and child in Massachusetts and America, and every other striver of every other race and kind who is reminded tonight that the American Dream is for you, too..."

What a BOLD statement.

As I stated in my previous blog post to this one, I was face to face with hundreds of minorities who had no hope in little old Rhode Island politics let alone America. I hope they along with the thousands around all of us that have given up hope will get it back some day.

I found some interesting info on FactMonster.com

Hey Sista Wendy...

JB your participation was a piece of history in the making. I am not familiar with all the nuances of American elections, or why your elections are segmented every couple of years. But congratulations to the winner!!

That's fantastic! It's great to see another brother make it in!! I am reminded of Douglas Wilder in VA. The year was 1990. I was a freshman in college.
