Don't Fear It, Embrace It

I'm taking a course in Philosophy called Existentialism.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with this term it is a philosophy that discusses the ultimate question of human existense. It questions the meaning to life, personal commitments, human relations, suffering, despair, hope, freedom, authenticity, self deception, immortality, God, and death.

Right now we are reading An Absurd Reasoning: Absurdity and Suicide by Albert Camus and I must say his work is deep.

This is just a taste of what Camus has to offer before I get to the point of this posting.

Of whom and what indeed can I say: " I know that!" This heart within me I can feel and judge that it exists. This world I can touch, and likewise judge that it exists. There ends all my knowledge, and the rest is construction. For if I try to seize this self of which I feel sure, if I try to define and to sumarize it, it is nothing but water slipping through my fingers. I can sketch one by one all the aspects it is able to assume, all those likewise that have been attributed to it, this upbringing, cannot be added up. This very heart which is mine will forever remain indefinable to me. Between the certainty I have of my existence and the content I try to give to that assurance, the gap will never be filled. Forever I shall be a stranger to myself"
--Albert Camus

Excuse me

I have to exhale.....

Why do people stay away from dicussing death?

Because we fear it.
Why talk about something so dreadful like death when we have so much to live for?

We all just put it on the back burner as if it doesn't exist when in reality it's the only thing that really does exist.

If in your heart you believe that you are going to heaven what in the world are you afraid of?
Isn't salvation the best reward?
Isn't going to heaven much better then living here in this sinful world where we are all born in sin?
I refuse to fear death.
I embrace it.

Just some things going through my mind as I write my paper....

Good post. I agree that there is no fear in death. It is the one thing that is certain. The one thing that we don't have to question.

good stuff pretty deep. death is death but not living a worthwhile life is death also.

I like the reference to Camus. I've only read his book, The Stranger. I did recently by a Camus reader that I haven't started on yet. You guys are studying some heavy stuff!
Yes, most look at the subject of death as gloomy and macabre, but I, fortunately, have a positive attitude on the subject. The belief in eternal salvation is comforting enough, but death is quite a mystery to me and intriguing. My only fear is that I die before accomplishing what I want in life.

Deat is certain, and once you can talk about it and embrace the finality of it, you will live a fully life..

I feel death is the gate to endless joy. Is sleep a little death? can we change that "world I can touch" in death? The promise of an everlasting life in christ is such a change. We live so much in our emotions, that the thought of being able to have another life after death is truly joyful. that is if we retain the wisdom we gain in this life.

Thanks everyone for all your comments.

Brother Stephen....
Camus is definately DEEP!
I've had to read each page over 3 or 4 times before truly understanding what he "really" means.
How is The Stranger? There is an excerpt from it in the book that we are reading, but we aren't assinged to read it....maybe I should though.

Girl I think the same thing. Why do people act like it is such a crime to discuss death. Isn't that ignorance? Why keep living life blindly. Great post.
